Tabitha’s House
Tabitha’s House is a non-profit organization who’s goal is to help sex-trafficking victims in their recovery. To help them achieve their full potential of being able to help at a national level, we believe a redesign of their website is needed. The modifications enable a faster, easier user experience in hopes to further education on the seriousness the sex-trafficking crisis, receive an influx of help through donations or volunteers, and help as many victims towards recovery.
Why Tabitha’s House? Tabitha’s House is a great resource for victims of human trafficking and those who want to assist them. It provides the tangible necessities and treatment that victims need to recover, which is paid for through the donations made to Tabitha’s House. Tabitha’s House also provides great resources and hotlines for current and recovered victims to utilize to prevent future relapse. With increased awareness of the crisis, it can decrease potential victims.

Interviews
A takeaway that I learned from the interview process asking potential users is that it’s not just females that can research resources for victims of human trafficking. We should include male perspectives for the research stage to receive a true understanding of all potential users.
-
Research of the non-profit is done prior to any involvement. The general public like to know how the organization allocates their donations, transparency creates trust. Some of those we interviewed suggested they would like to read testimonies from recovered victims but understand that with the circumstance, it may not be feasible. The testimonies or quotes would help provide credibility to the organization. Donations are preferred over volunteering because it is easier, but they will volunteer if they have time. When it comes to figuring out what nonprofit cause to help, the interviewees chose an organization that helps a cause they have some emotional tie to.

The general topic of human trafficking is not made aware but is mentioned every now and then. Living in Atlanta, it is seen throughout the Atlanta airport, especially the women’s bathroom, due to it being the hot spot for human trafficking. People do see stories on social media on how people can become victims of human trafficking, and how to spot the signs, but not many people openly discuss the crisis because it is a sensitive topic.

There are two situations you have to be on the lookout for: victims of human trafficking and if you are in a situation of becoming a target for human trafficking. You can usually tell when you see a victim of human trafficking. They look uncomfortable and lack of eye contact. The person that is usually accompanying the victim has a very overbearing demeanor. Women are made aware of all the tactics that predators can use to target them. They are told to be aware of your surroundings, don’t stay on your phone, walk with another person. Don’t touch foreign objects stuck to your car. There are new tactics that are being used to target women and children, being observant and trusting your gut is the best way to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

Amelia
“I worry for my two daughters; they are at the age where they are prime targets for human trafficking. I wish they were made more aware of how serious this crisis is.”
Amelia recently had a close friend whose daughter was a victim of human trafficking. This personal instance sparked her journey to become an advocate for promoting awareness surrounding human trafficking. Having two daughters of her own causes her to worry. Other than learning more and spreading awareness whenever she can, she wants to be able to help the cause in any way (monetary or volunteer work).
